Bounded Existentials and Minimal Typing

چکیده
We study an extension of the second-order calculus of bounded quantiication, System F , with bounded existential types. Surprisingly, the most natural formulation of this extension lacks the important minimal typing property of F , which ensures that the set of types possessed by a typeable term can be characterized by a single least element. We consider alternative formulations and give an algorithm computing minimal types for the slightly weaker Kernel Fun variant of F .

Context dependence and implicit arguments in existentials∗
This paper discusses the semantics of bare existentials, i.e. existentials in which nothing follows the post copular NP (e.g. There are four sections). While it has sometimes been recognized that the interpretation of such sentences depends in some way on context, the exact nature of the context dependence involved has not been properly understood. It is shown that the meaning of bare existenti...
متن کاملSound and Complete Bidirectional Typechecking for Higher-Rank Polymorphism with Existentials and Indexed Types
Bidirectional typechecking, in which terms either synthesize a type or are checked against a known type, has become popular for its scalability, its error reporting, and its ease of implementation. Following principles from proof theory, bidirectional typing can be applied to many type constructs. The principles underlying a bidirectional approach to indexed types (generalized algebraic datatyp...
متن کاملBounded Quantiication with Bottom
While numerous extensions of Cardelli and Wegner's calculus of polymorphism and subtyping, Kernel Fun, have been studied during the past decade, one quite simple one has received little attention: the addition of a minimal type Bot, dual to the familiar maximal type Top. We develop basic meta-theory for this extension. Although most of the usual properties of Kernel Fun (existence of meets and ...

متن کاملA note on the socle of certain types of f-rings
For any reduced commutative $f$-ring with identity and bounded inversion, we show that a condition which is obviously necessary for the socle of the ring to coincide with the socle of its bounded part, is actually also sufficient. The condition is that every minimal ideal of the ring consist entirely of bounded elements. It is not too stringent, and is satisfied, for instance, by rings of ...
